EduStation

EduStation Desktop

EduStation is a fully functional educational workstation for children 2-18 years which can be installed on almost any computer. It is a selection of quality free educational programs and information, containing more than 150 educational activities and information for school projects.

Following is a list of only a small set of activities that kids can find on EduStation:

Maths* Activities for smaller children including perceptual development, memory exercises, learning to use a computer and learning basic concepts like colours, telling the time and basic numeracy.
* Language learning activities including reading games and a typing tutor.
* Mathematical games, exercises and activities.
* Loads more, including memory, geography, chemistry and even a desktop planetarium.
* A full Office suite.
* School wikipedia, which contains detailed information and pictures for school projects (similar to an encyclopedia).

Some key points of EduStation include the following:Geography

* No Internet is required. In the developing world Internet is expensive and not always available. Even if schools or homes have Internet access, parents and caretakers often don't want kids to have full access to the web. EduStation supplies all the educational tools and information that a kid will need, off-line!

* Older computers can be used. EduStation is built on a Linux platform. It doesn't include all the (often useless) nice-to-have features found in some modern software. These features usually come at a price and use too many resources. Linux is fast and uses less resources, which allows it to run smoothly on slightly older hardware. Parents upgrading to a new computer, and wanting to dedicate the old PC to their kids, can use EduStation to convert it into a very usable educational toolkit. Also, schools and charities who receive donated computers (often second-hand) can also transform these into fully functional educational stations with EduStation.

* No viruses. Linux is mostly virus-free.
